Can I just use a general AI chatbot?
A general AI chatbot can explain the rules in plain English, and we use AI for similar jobs like reading documents and helping you find the right papers.
What it cannot do is see your record: your scheme statements, your payslips, the gaps where payroll got it wrong. For most people who owe, the hard part is not the arithmetic. It is getting the right inputs.
Remedy gets the inputs right first, checking your scheme's figures against your payslips and other papers, then runs the maths deterministically. That is where the real money is.
Does Remedy use AI?
Yes, where it makes sense: extracting figures from payslips and statements, explaining your position in plain English, helping you know what to upload.
Never for tax calculations. Every £ figure in your position comes from deterministic, tested code, traceable back to your own documents and the rules in law, not from an LLM doing arithmetic in prose.
We believe that when it comes to tax, determinism cannot be traded away.
Why not just trust my Pension Savings Statement?
If you received one and it shows a charge, take it seriously, but absence of a statement is not proof you are clear. Scheme administrators only auto-issue to some members. If you have income outside the scheme, another pension, or a tapered allowance, you can owe tax without ever being sent a warning. That blind spot is exactly what our free check looks for.
Could the remedy mean I am owed money, not just charged?
Sometimes, yes. The McCloud remedy recalculated pension growth for 2015 to 2022, and for some people that means a lower Annual Allowance charge than they were first told, or a refund of tax already paid. For others it means a charge they did not know about. The only way to know which is to look, and the check is free.
Which schemes do you cover?
The free check works for these public-sector pension schemes: NHS, Teachers', Civil Service, Armed Forces, Police, Fire, Judicial and Local Government (LGPS). We work out McCloud for the NHS, teachers, the civil service, the armed forces, the police, firefighters, the judiciary and local government, in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Every estimate is labelled with what it rests on, and your scheme's statement replaces it when it arrives. Create a free account and add your statements. A specialist check of one tax year is £99 including VAT. Another year is another £99.
I pay Scottish income tax. Does this still apply to me?
Yes. McCloud and the Annual Allowance are UK-wide rules and work the same wherever you live and work. What changes is the tax rate on any charge, because Scotland sets its own, generally higher, income tax rates. Your position is worked out on your rates; the illustrative examples on this page use the England, Wales and Northern Ireland higher rate of 40%, so a Scottish taxpayer's charge on the same pension growth is usually a little higher.
Why deterministic calculations?
Tax and pension charges need to be correct. HMRC will not accept "the AI got it wrong." Remedy pins every £ figure to deterministic, tested code, versioned so the same inputs always give the same answer, with every number traceable back to your own documents and the rules in law. A specialist checks your pack before we send it; a qualified professional signs off regulated advice. We use AI to read documents and explain results in plain English, never to do the arithmetic.
Are you financial advisers?
Regulated advice comes from qualified professionals. We work out your position and a specialist checks your pack; when you need advice on what to do next, we hand you to a qualified professional, yours or one we introduce. We produce the facts; they own the advice.
Can I use my own accountant or adviser?
Yes. After a specialist has checked your pack, invite your own accountant or IFA from Settings in one action, or they send you a consent link. We produce the reconciled position with every figure sourced back to exactly where it came from. You can also ask us to introduce a qualified accountant or IFA who works in this area every day. That introduction is not access until you grant consent. You are never locked in.
What if I am fine?
We tell you clearly, with no upsell. You can still create a free account for document storage and re-run the check when your circumstances change. Many members keep their record with us even when the first check is green.
What does it cost?
The check is free, and so is your account for as long as you like: documents stored and a check you can re-run when your circumstances change. A specialist check of one tax year is £99 including VAT. A correction the specialist asks for is included. Another year is another £99. For NHS members the accountant or IFA fee on top is often reclaimable under the NHS Cost Claim Back Scheme. We do not submit that claim. Your account and stored documents stay free, whether or not you buy a check.
Can I claim professional fees back?
Often, but it varies by scheme, and it is for the McCloud remedy specifically, not for ordinary annual allowance advice.
The NHS has a dedicated Cost Claim Back Scheme: up to £1,000 including VAT for accountancy and £500 including VAT for advice. Teachers' and the Civil Service reimburse advice up to around £500. The Armed Forces, Police and Firefighters' schemes reimburse professional fees case by case, with no set cap. The Judicial scheme covers £500 plus VAT for one specific type of advice only, with no accountancy allowance. The Local Government scheme (LGPS) has no fee-reimbursement route.
Claims are time-limited, usually six to twelve months after your remedy statement or election. Pick your scheme in the "I work in" selector above to see the published route. We do not submit the claim.
Do I have to pay a big bill up front?
Often not. If you owe an Annual Allowance charge, you can usually ask your pension scheme to pay it for you instead of finding the cash now. It is called Scheme Pays, and it is common with McCloud charges.
We model pay-now versus Scheme Pays honestly, side by side, so you can see the real cost of each. It is your decision; we lay out the trade-offs and never push one option.
Will you keep my records?
Yes, that is the point. Your documents and figures live in one place you own and can always reach, so you never lose access the way old payroll logins can take it away. Keeping your account and records, and re-running the check when needed, is free whether or not you buy a specialist check.
What documents do I need?
To start, none. The screener runs on questions alone. For a full position, payslips, pension statements, and any Annual Allowance or McCloud letters help most.
Getting them in is quick. Sign in to your pension, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) or payroll website through Remedy and we save the files for you. Or upload them from any device, email them to your private Remedy address, or photograph them with your phone. We never see your password. We tell you exactly what we need based on your scheme and verdict.
Is there an app for iPhone or Android?
Yes, and you do not need the App Store or Google Play. Sign in to Remedy on your phone, and Home shows you how to add it to your home screen in two taps.
On iPhone or iPad, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen. This works in Safari, and in Chrome, Edge or Firefox on any recent iPhone. On Android, tap Add to home screen when Chrome offers it.
Remedy then opens full screen like any other app. You can photograph letters and payslips straight into your record. On Android you can also share a file into Remedy from another app; on iPhone, email it to your private Remedy address instead.
Can you help with charges from years ago?
Often yes. McCloud and Annual Allowance can span multiple tax years. The free check flags historical risk. A specialist check is one tax year at a time, £99 including VAT, and another year is another £99.
How long does it take?
The check is two minutes. Your full position depends on documents and scheme, typically within a few working days once a specialist has checked it, not months of you chasing employers and administrators alone.
